What a Year

Have you been perusing the internet for one more 2019 in review blog/infographic/listsicle to read? Well, you've come to the right place! It's been a big year at Apparatus and we're running down our top highlights, lessons learned, and what's next.

  • New Digs: After many years of bouncing between home and campaign offices, we put down roots in downtown Minneapolis. Now based in the historic Flour Exchange building, we're loving the views, the company, and the very green walls. In fact, we like it so much we're expanding our footprint in 2020 -- stay tuned!

  • New Projects: 2019 was a big year in new clients and exciting projects.

  • We started working with the MN Craft Brewers Guild to support their growing membership and need for modernized beer laws (more on that to come when the 2020 session starts!). Highlight: Organizing and facilitating the first annual Legislator Quiz Bowl at the State Fair!

  • We worked with several nonprofits -- Social Enterprise Alliance, Down Syndrome Association MN, GiGi's Playhouse Twin Cities -- to support their administrative, advocacy, and event initiatives. Highlight: Supporting World Down Syndrome Day at the MN Capitol!

  • We helped Decoding Dyslexia pass new directives included in the 2019 Education Omnibus that will support struggling readers. Highlight: Collecting over 2500 hand written postcards from parents of students with dyslexia!

  • We began work with the Homes for All coalition to help strengthen the group and achieve more wins at the Capitol. Highlight: Conducting over 100 hours of 1:1 interviews with legislators, housing advocates, community leaders, and supporters!

  • We launched and lobbied for Minnesotans for Responsible Marijuana Regulation. Although legislation was not passed in 2019, there is overwhelming momentum and appetite for serious conversations about what it would take to legalize recreational cannabis in Minnesota.

Highlight: Hosting a pretty epic campaign kick-off party!

  • New Lines of Business: Clearly we weren't busy enough, so we also launched a new division of the company, too. Since we only launch companies in March, this March we debuted Blunt Strategies, an offshoot of Apparatus focused on the cannabis industry. You'll have to go over there to see what we've been up to but TL;DR: it's also a lot.

  • New Faces: As you've gleaned, we've had a lot going on. Luckily, we've added some amazing team members to get it all done. Kyrstin Schuette joined us in the spring to bring structure to our MRMR field work and provide strategy and guidance to our clients running campaigns. Maddie Greene joined us this summer to provide content management, amplification, and awesomeness. You can see Maddie's work on any of our social media platforms and she'll be leading several new projects in the new year including several online experience projects.

We've had a lot of fun in 2019 and can't wait to see what 2020 brings. Happy new year!
